ABOUT THE JOB
As a Pharmacist at Costco, you will dispense prescription medications, assess therapeutic appropriateness and counsel patients on proper medication use. You will practice to the full extent of provincial regulations, collaborate with other health care professionals and support health and wellness services such as medication reviews, immunizations (where permitted) and patient follow-up.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Dispense prescription medications and apply appropriate auxiliary labels in accordance with provincial regulations and Costco policies.
- Review prescriptions and over-the-counter medications for therapeutic appropriateness, including interactions, allergies, contraindications, dosing, frequency and dosage form.
- Verify refills with prescribers by phone when required, take verbal prescriptions when permitted and recommend therapeutic substitutions when appropriate.
- Collect and update patient medical histories and maintain accurate confidential records in the pharmacy system.
- Collaborate with health care professionals to resolve medication therapy issues and support safe patient outcomes.
- Educate patients on medication use, side effects and proper storage; answer questions on over-the-counter medications and products.
- Preserve patient confidentiality and ensure secure handling of protected health information.
- Work closely with Registered Technicians to allocate workflow effectively and maintain safe dispensing processes.
- Conduct health and wellness clinics and document interventions where permitted by provincial regulations.
- Adapt, extend or modify prescriptions within scope of practice and under applicable delegation/collaboration rules.
- Administer injections and medications where permitted by provincial legislation and training.
- Perform medication reviews and medication reconciliation; support patient follow-up within permitted scope of practice.
- Order and communicate laboratory tests where permitted by provincial regulations.
- Support a culture of patient safety by preventing, documenting and reporting medication incidents appropriately.
- Maintain professional competence through continuing education and keep required certifications in good standing.
- Follow Costco Pharmacy policies, systems, safety and security procedures at all times.
- Act as Pharmacist-in-Charge when needed, supporting smooth dispensary operations and supervising interns/students.
